That would all depend on what you are wanting to spend on the reel. Are you going to use it a couple of times a year, or are you going to do a lot of fishing? Are you going to use it strictly for bass fishing or all-around fishing? You have to decide if you want a baitcaster, open-face spinning, or closed face spinning reel. As far as the rod, a 5.6 ft. UglyStik in Med. action is what I would recommend. It's a well built rod that can be used for all types of fishing. I would suggest that if you are right-handed, you get a left-hand retrieve reel. It makes is so much faster when casting lures. Cast with the right, retrieve with the left. I'm also partial to baitcaster reels. I use mine for everything from bass fishing to tiger musky fishing. Welcome to the site and good luck fishing.

;D Well hello!! Sage. Like old Muskie said, you got alot of choices to make. Everyone is different and is more comfortable with different things. Take me, I like light to meduim action rods. 6 to 7 foot and over the years I've decided that I like okuma spinning reels the best. I prefer open faced spinning reels because being polish I can't seem to figure out how to cast baitcastin reels with out getting a huge birds nest. It's nice to pick out 2 or 3 rod reel combos that you can use for most of your fishing but if you're a fanatic like me you'll go broke. Cabela's has a rod called the whoopin' stick which is great and cheap. Most cost around $20. The okuma's on the other hand are in the $40. and up over $100. range. Being a fishing nut I have around twenty diferent rods and reels, from ultra lite to medium action. I have okuma reels in different colors so I can tell what pound test line I'm using( because I like a perticular brand/color). I'm pretty sure cabla's has a picture of me in one of their stores because I financed it. Oh! and did I mention my salmon/steelie set ups and my salt water gear and that's right don't for get all my Ice fishin' stuff, but that's another story. Good Luck!!

Hi Sage, Both fishing rods above recomended are truely classics and you do get the best bang for your buck.Ok I was at Walmart the other day and i was impressed with the South bend company has produced yet another great fishing rod. Its called the black beauty 2 it comes both in spincast and bait caster or closed faced lengths. I bought the bait caster size and this lil rod proved me it worth last spring. I landed some nice Flat head Catz, it battled the 15-28 pounders like nothing. So sage im going to have to saY for the price of 15.99 The black beauty is my choice. It has back bone that ugly stick seems to lack but with the same construction.
