Heres my fishin tip first things first check your drag setting on the your reel before casting , Next when you set the hook and start landing any fish on the fly rod or spincast rod always i repeat always keep the line tight enough so no slack in the line is present when fighting out your fish. Heres why fishing for huge northern pike on day on lake Athabasca northen Alberta Canada., I got sloppy i first just tied on a lure and started casting with out checking the drag on my spincast reel wouldnt you know it first cast fish on!, My fishing rod arched with a frenzied tension finally i just basically winched him in he was close to the boat and my dang he still had tons of fight in him ,, yep my drag wasnt set perfect all you heard was snap when he took a deep run under the boat then a another snap! First snap was my rod tip breaking under the boat and thw second snap you guessed it my line Total cost of that Cast = Priceless he was a fish of a life time!!!!! GRRRRR!

Jk for pike i like using live bait like a large fat headed minnow on a bobber set up. All i do is set up my bobber with the minnow so its suspended in the water about a foot or two from the bottom. Then all you have to do is wait and hold on.

Ok for me i like using as close as i can get to what the fish are use to eating in their lake ect. So im gonna have to say when fishing for bass and from trying to understanding them for the years i have fished i found out they can not resist frogs and mice! Soft baits sure, but natural live of semi live frogs, mice you just cant beat it for bass. Well thats my oppinon of course.

Heres a tip,, when fishing if the baits not staying on the hook i use a very small piece of rubber inner tube about the diameter of a pencil eraser. HOw do make these fast? I use a paper hole punch to cut them out..IT will keep the bait from sliding off. Works great saves on bait. Because when fishing barbless the bait seems to come off to easy and this fixes it.

Keeping the worms fresher and cleaner use cut up newspaper instead of dirt its cleaner and the night crawlers last longer "they eat the paper and they get big!!! Try it ....

When fishing for pike or musky i using a bobber with a minnow yep just a split shot and a J hook sometimes i dont even use the split shot..
Works great for wallys too. Once you find em you can keep that bait exactly how high you want off the bottom and see the lightest of bites...

When fishing for perch i always start off with using worms as soon as i find a school i change over to a a rocker jig and half minnow ,, You seem to increase your odds of catching bigger perch including that big pike or walleye swimming close by. ALBERTA MOOSES NEVER FAIL PERCH METHOD. <-----Me trade mark ha
