Careless Wishes by Robert Richards
I got out of bed at 5 a.m. this morning to go fishing. When I got to the river, it was still dark. Working my way across the rocks I only fell once, then I got to the bank where I would keep my stuff.
I got my rod rigged then started to get wet as I walked on in the river. When I got to my favorite rock that I fish from, it was still underwater. The river was running high, so my rock was about two and a half feet deep. I noticed that I was not alone this morning as others were out trying their luck as well. I was using a rapala 4-inch minnow and was after Stripers today.
It was daylight now and time to start fishing for the day. Someone yelled 'FISH ON!' - I knew it would not be long until I got my first one. Time went on and I saw several Stripers come out. It was then that I made my wish - 'I want a big one'
Then it happened... when I was almost done reeling in my cast, it hit. The fight was on and I was floating down the river. It was moving good this morning and I looked like a bobber going downstream.
I could here the others yell, 'Do you have your Arkansas fish license?'
When I got to my feet, the fight started and the fish was up 1 to 0 from pulling me in. Ten minutes later I finally landed my fish. It was a 25-pound Flathead Catfish!
So be careful for what you wish - you might get a big surprise - and no STRIPERS THAT DAY!
