By Matt Bewley
Super-Pro angler Bruce “Doc” Samson, of Minnetrista, brought in 9.68 pounds of walleye Thursday to hold off second-place challenger Daryl Christensen of Montello, Wis., and win the Professional Walleye Trail Lund Boats Pro-Am Tournament on Otter Tail Lake.
“There was a lot of pressure,” Samson said. “I talked to Daryl (Christensen) last night and he told me about the fish he was on and it made me nervous. ”
Samson, who was the last to weigh in on the final day needed about 4 pounds to beat out fellow PWT veteran Christensen’s total of 28.32 pounds. Samson more than doubled that mark with a four-fish basket weighing 9.68 pounds, giving him a three-day total of 34.49 pounds and the win.
Mark Christianson of Walker finished third with 25.1 pounds, and Sam Anderson of Inver Grove Heights fifth with 22.67 pounds.
On the amateur side, Wadena’s Bruce Boyd, who had been in 14th place after the first day, won first with a three-day total of 26.93 pounds. Fred Sanchez of Fergus Falls finished with 19.56 pounds, enough for 14th. Dennis Gullickson of Fergus Falls finished 26th with 17.31 pounds of walleye to his credit.
